Endovascular Surgery Program

The Endovascular Surgery Program has rapidly evolved into one of the most active and innovative programs in the region. The program offers the full array of endovascular treatment options including stent graft repair of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysms, angioplasty and stenting of peripheral arterial occlusive disease, carotid artery stenting, thrombolytic therapy and endovascular treatments for venous occlusive disease.

It is our philosophy that patients are best served in an environment of cooperation between surgeons and radiologists so that treatment decisions are unaffected by issues of specialty interest. All patients are evaluated pre-operatively by a team consisting of vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists working together in the vascular evaluation center. All stent graft aneurysm repairs are performed in the operating room by a collaborative team of vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and a "dedicated" anesthesia team to offer each patient the benefit of the expertise of all three specialties. This protocol has enabled our team to produce results which are equal to the finest achieved anywhere in the world.

In this emerging specialty, follow-up of new stent graft devices is essential. All of our post-operative patients are evaluated at least every six months with follow-up imaging studies. We have developed our own unique database for patient monitoring post-operatively. This is managed by a full-time database coordinator. 100% patient follow-up has been achieved with this protocol in place.

Support for the program is provided by a team of four vascular surgeons, an interventional radiologist, three vascular technologists, a program administrator and the above mentioned database coordinator. World-class basic science research activity in the Aneurysm Research Laboratory at the St. Luke's (under the direction of M. David Tilson, MD) complements the clinical program, continues investigation of the etiology of aneurysmal disease and searches for possible non-surgical treatment alternatives.
