Specializing in reconstructive microsurgery, he is fellowship-trained in breast and head & neck cancer reconstruction, facial reanimation, and surgical treatment for lymphedema. Dr. Dayan is also an expert in all aspects of plastic surgery including sophisticated reconstructive surgery and the full range of cosmetic operations.

Dr. Dayan completed his residency in plastic surgery at Georgetown University Hospital where he trained under leaders in the field of both implant and autologous breast reconstruction. He completed his fellowship in microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, recognized as the premier center for reconstructive microsurgery in the world.

Dr. Dayan’s research interests include composite tissue allotransplantation including facial transplantation, facial reanimation, breast reconstruction, lymphedema, and virtual surgery simulation. He is collaborating with other medical and surgical departments within Continuum on novel and important clinical research dedicated to substantially improving patient care.

Research Experience

Composite Tissue Allotransplantation
Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
Performed modified hindlimb allotransplants in a rat model to compare various non-myeloablative conditioning protocols in an attempt to achieve tolerance to the donor hindlimb. My particular interest was in the vascularized bone marrow component of the composite tissue allotransplant and whether this could be beneficial in achieving chimerism in patients undergoing solid organ transplants or face and hand transplantation.

Virtual Surgery and Surgical Animation
New York University
Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Division of Cardiac Surgery July 1998 – December 2004 Developed computerized 3D models of normal and cleft palate anatomy for use in surgical animations and virtual surgery simulations to teach current techniques in cleft lip and palate repair to surgeons in developing countries. Designed a complete animated cardiac model based on human histologic sections and real motion data from animal studies.
