James J. McGinty, MD, FACS, joined the Department of Surgery at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in August, 2003. He practices and teaches at both the St. Luke’s and Roosevelt campuses of the Hospital Center. After completing his fellowship training in Minimal Access Surgery at Columbia and Cornell Universities, Dr. McGinty was the first to perform laparoscopic bariatric surgery, as well as other advanced minimally invasive and robotic techniques at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. To date, he has performed over 1000 of these advanced procedures. He currently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University.

As Director of the Surgical Residency Training Program at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, Dr. McGinty strives to improve patient care through education of surgeons-in-training. In 2003, Dr. McGinty introduced simulation technology to the program and is now the director of the Center for Simulation, Training and Robotic Surgery at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt. In addition to advancing the surgical skills of residents, medical students and other surgeons, Dr. McGinty collaborates with researchers in the Center to develop new surgical techniques and technology. He has presented his work on the national and international level.

Dr. McGinty is a member of multiple professional societies including the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (ASMBS). He serves on several committees for the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has been featured in the print and television media, including ABC’s “20/20.”

Born in Indiana and raised on the New Jersey shore, Dr. McGinty graduated Boston College with a degree in biology. He is a graduate of Drexel University School of Medicine and the general surgery residency program of Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. McGinty and his wife, Sandra, live in Bergen County, New Jersey, and have 4 children.
