Colorectal Fellowship

The St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery currently offers a one-year ABCRS-certified fellowship for one graudating general surgery chief resident per year. Applications to the Colon Rectal Fellowship are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and all appointments to these programs are made through the National Resident Match Program (the "match").

About the Fellowship

There is one available position per year. There are currently four American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery certified faculty members involved in the fellowship encompassing all areas of colon and rectal disease.

Affiliation

The program and hospital is a major teaching affiliate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Case Numbers

Colon and Rectal Surgery fellows perform approximately 60% of cases in the anorectal field and 40% in abdominal colon surgery. Graduates perform around 800 ambulatory-based endoscopic procedures as well as diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopic and flexible endoscopic examinations annually on the service.

Strengths of Program

The program provides a good representative experience of the entire field of colon and rectal surgery. There is also a special interest in constipation and pelvic outlet disorders, incontinence and prolapse. The program also provides expertise in office management and surgical treatment of a wide variety of acute anaorectal disease, amubulatory office-based anorectal procedures, and expertise in management of HIV related illness.

Clinic and Office Experience

The resident spends two full days each week in the office. Another full day is devoted to office colonoscopy and minor surgery (under local anesthesia and/or with monitored sedation with propofol) with approximately 500 cases performed each year in the office.

Teaching and Conferences

PGY-1 through 5 general surgical residents rotate on the service at all times. Designated specialty weekly Colon and Rectal conference with radiology and pathology is held with the general surgery housestaff and faculty. Monthly journal club with faculty members are also held. Residents are expected to critically analyze and critique the most current literature and present these findings during conferences.

Anorectal Physiology

An active lab performs anorectal manometry, trans-rectal sonography, cinedefecography, colonic transit studies, electromyography and pudendal nerve terminal motor latency studies and sees approximately 400 patients per year.

Outside Rotations and Research

There is a three week rotation at the Cleveland Clinic Florida included for additional inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) experience. A research year is currently unavailable, but internal funding is available for original work.

A research project with presentation at the annual ASCRS meeting is expected of all fellows.

Those applicants selected for interviews will be notified by the Fellowship Selection Committee, and further instructions will be included in that notification. Due to volume, denial letters are not sent to those not selected.
