Division of General SurgerySt. Luke's-Roosevelt is proud to have a highly experienced staff in Renal Transplantation. This service has a rich background that started more than thirty years ago. Many accomplishments, including pioneering work in the preservation of donor kidneys, took place here at St. Luke's Roosevelt . The recent recruitment of Alan Benvenisty, M.D., FACS from another major program in New York City is the most recent step in building our superb program. As Director of the Transplant Program, Dr. Benvenisty has dedicated his efforts to the care and treatment of both the recipient and the living donor. His pioneering program is unique in that it includes a completely separate medical care team assigned to each donor for all phases of pre- and post-op care. This team includes two experienced laparoscopic/general surgeons, Drs. Fred Kimmelstiel and James McGinty. In addition, there is a dedicated transplant nephrologist for both the recipient (Dr. Steven Smith) and the donor (Dr. Germaine Chan). Dr. Benvenisty's specialized team also includes: a transplant financial analyst, a social worker and nurse coordinators, specially trained to deal with transplant patients. The Transplant Clinical Facility is self-contained and occupies the twelfth floor of 1090 Amsterdam Avenue and is equipped with all the modern technology including non-invasive diagnostic equipment. Dr. Benvenisty has brought with him expertise on many of the cutting-edge technologies in transplantation including transplantation of patients who have been told that they have an "incompatible donor" and the performance of transplants without the need for steroids. The success rate speaks volumes about this exceptional service. Dr. Benvenisty's program is the elite of the transplantation field, due to the facility, the technology, the staff, and the heart that each individual patient is shown.
