Lung Cancer

Specialists in thoracic surgery, pulmonary medicine, and medical and radiation oncology work together to develop the most current, innovative and individualized treatment plan for each lung cancer patient. We apply state-of-the art imaging technology to detect, diagnose and differentiate benign and malignant lesions, and to locate metastases. Depending upon the type and stage of the disease, we treat lung cancer with surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy, and combinations of each. These treatment plans are decided upon and coordinated at our multidisciplinary thoracic oncology conference. Our surgeons use advanced techniques and technology for staging and treatment of lung cancer, including VATS lobectomy, robotic assisted surgery and minimally invasive brachytherapy (radiation seed implants). We work closely with the network's radiation oncologists to benefit patients with the most sophisticated methods of delivering radiotherapy. This includes applying radiation treatments during surgery, and brachytherapy.

Benign Lung Diseases

Our surgeons treat many benign lung diseases and dysfunctions, including spontaneous pneumothorax, pulmonary infections, bleeding, lung abscesses, pleural effusions, congenital lung malformations, fungal diseases and tuberculosis.

Spontaneous pneumothorax occurs when air leaks through weak spots into the space between the lung and chest wall. This causes the lung to partially collapse and compromise respiration. Treatment frequently includes surgically inserting a chest tube to relieve pressure on the lung and enable it to re-inflate. Surgically repairing suspected weak spots or chemically treating the lung surface can prevent future collapse.

Emphysema is one of a group of lung disorders referred to as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that interfere with normal breathing. Similar diseases include asthma and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema's predominant symptoms includeshortness of breath and sensations of breathlessness. Over time, the effort to draw a breath becomes more labored. Emphysema sufferers may find relief from lung reduction surgery, which often eliminates the need for oxygen therapy and significantly enhances breathing. Many of our patients with malignant diseases also have emphysema. Our knowledge of techniques to remove or repair areas of emphysema can significantly reduce the risk of surgery in these patients and improve their quality of life.

Interstitial lung disease is the general term for a diverse group of chronic disorders. When a surgical biopsy is necessary to identify the specific type of interstitial disease, our surgeons routinely use minimally invasive techniques to reduce risk and trauma -especially among extremely ill patients.
