Division of Thoracic Surgery

The Division of Thoracic Surgery has been built upon a history of excellence in clinical care and innovation. In 1935, the first successful pneumonectomy for lung cancer was accomplished by Drs. Henry Lyle and Alexander Ada at the St. Luke's Hospital. The tradition continued under pioneers such as Max Chamberlain, MD who developed many techniques, which are still practiced today. Currently, our thoracic surgeons coordinate the extensive chest-related medical services and professional skills throughout our institution to form a comprehensive health team. Our integrated approach allows us to manage all forms of thoracic diseases for both benign and malignant conditions.

Our commitment to multidisciplinary, comprehensive evaluation and treatment is evident in our recent development of the Eliana Center for the care and treatment of thoracic malignancies. Founded in 2004 through a generous philanthropic gift, the resources of this center will be available to help navigate the patient with lung cancer, esophageal cancer and all forms of thoracic malignancies including thymoma, chest wall tumors, and mediastinal tumors. Treatment is individualized throughout the diagnostic, therapeutic and healing phases of one's disease.

The Thoracic Division is a full service team. Significant interest is also displayed in the treatment of benign thoracic disorders such as emphysema and other forms of pulmonary conditions. Our surgeons also have expertise in many benign esophageal disorders such as complex hiatal hernias, gastroesophageal reflux disease and motility disorders, including achalasia.

Our extensive experience in the resection of mediastinal tumors and cysts has been characterized by the innovative minimally invasive procedures and resection techniques that we have developed in our laboratories and clinical practices and subsequently demonstrated to other surgeons. These capabilities have been applied to other disorders including the treatment of myasthenia gravis and hyperhidrosis.

Over the last 4 years the division's volume has risen significantly each year while maintaining its outstanding clinical outcomes. During this period, our surgical team has been at the forefront of the thoracic surgery field in the areas of minimally invasive and robotic surgery. They have pioneered many of the current robotic techniques in thoracic surgery and refined many minimally invasive techniques that have been developed over the past decade.

Our surgeons are actively involved in many research initiatives to improve the quality and outcomes of current medical care. A thoracic database allows our surgeons to monitor outcomes and quality on a routine basis. Our surgeons are actively involved in many national and international societies. They present their research at regional, national and international conferences such as the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, and the World Conference on Lung Cancer. Over the past 3 years our division has published over 25 journal articles, abstracts, and book chapters.

The mission of our division is to deliver outstanding healthcare with an individualized and caring approach. We are committed to serving each patient's physical and emotional needs throughout diagnosis, treatment, recovery and rehabilitation. Our surgeons coordinate the efforts of anesthesiologists, oncologists, radiation oncology, pulmonologists and gastroenterologists to deliver an individualized and interdisciplinary plan for each patient. We are aided in this effort by our nurse practitioners and patient navigators, who are also available as valuable resources to assist in the education and coordination of care for patients. Utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and outstanding medical services and consultants our surgeons are able to offer the most up-to-date techniques and care available throughout the world. We are committed to improve upon our recent accomplishments and lead the field of thoracic surgery in the 21 st century.
