Division of Colorectal Surgery

The Division of Colorectal surgery is comprised of three Board Certified Colorectal Surgeons. A one-year fellowship in Colon Rectal Surgery is offered to board-eligible surgeons following completion of an accredited general surgery residency.

A full anorectal physiology laboratory, under the leadership Dr. Mitchell Bernstein, offers anorectal manometry, pudendal nerve terminal motor latencies, and transrectal ultrasound. In conjunction with the Department of Radiology, cine defecography and MR defecography are offered.

In addition to being a tertiary referral center for difficult cases, a large number of patients wishing office based colonoscopy and anorectal procedures are seen in the offices of Drs. Gottesman and Bernstein. These offices are conveniently adjacent to the Roosevelt Hospital. General surgical residents and a colon rectal fellow often attend these office hours learning the intricacies of anorectal surgery, office management of acute anorectal disease and colonoscopies.

Laparoscopic procedures are performed by two of the faculty trained in advanced laparoscopic techniques, including laparoscopic colectomies and colostomies.

Ongoing research sponsored by the Division of Colorectal Surgery offers residents an opportunity to participate in clinical research projects. SLRHC is one of the few sites certified for trials of an artificial anal sphincter for otherwise untreatable fecal incontinence.
