PROGRAM DIRECTORS: SHARON M. ROSENBAUM SMITH, MD;
SUSAN K. BOOLBOL, MD

The Continuum Cancer Center is composed of the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center and the Beth Israel Medical Center. Each site has its own cancer center which is dedicated to the multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of breast cancer. Fellows in our program benefit from a broad experience at both sites. There are eight dedicated full-time breast surgeons who treat over 1100 breast cancers per year. Each year two fellows will be accepted for a one year fellowship.

The overall goal of the training program is to provide specialized training in the multidisciplinary treatment of both benign and malignant breast diseases. This will be accomplished by rotating through the various disciplines involved in the diagnosis and management of breast disease. During the one year fellowship, the fellows will spend time on the different breast surgery teams, and will also gain experience with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, cytology, radiology, plastic surgery, psycho-oncology and genetics.

Throughout the training period, the fellows will also gain administrative knowledge of fundamentals of operating a breast surgery practice and the importance of collaborating with various disciplines. In addition, there is ample opportunity to participate in community outreach programs.

We also offer training in many new technologies being used both in diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The fellows will receive vast experience in office-based ultrasound-guided biopsies and intraoperative needle placement.

Conferences include a weekly multidisciplinary breast conference, research conference, morbidity and mortality, journal club and grand rounds. Our fellows take part in the conferences through case and topic presentations. Fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in clinical research projects. Early in the year, research interests are discussed with each fellow and projects are designed accordingly.
