The relationship of both St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals with the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons has traditionally been a strong and vital link. Indeed, prior to the move of the Columbia Medical School to Washington Heights in 1910, Roosevelt Hospital was the only teaching hospital for the medical school. When the Columbia Trustees announced an uptown move, it was the decision of the Roosevelt Hospital Trustees to remain in our midtown location- a prescient decision in light of the recent extraordinary growth in this part of Manhattan during the past decade.

The surgical staff at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center are faculty members of the Columbia College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. George J. Todd, the Chairman of Surgery at SLR, is the Walter A. Wichern Professor of Surgery at Columbia and Dr. D. Michael Tilson who served as Chairman at SLR during the period of 1988-1995, holds the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Chair of Surgery at Columbia.

Columbia Medical Students receive their clinical training at both St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals. Residents from various Departments at Columbia Medical School also rotate through both SLR sites during their training. All surgical housestaff officers hold appointments as officers and fellows at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons.
