About the doctor
Faiz Y. Bhora, MD, FACS, joined St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center in June 2006 as an attending in the Division of Thoracic Surgery. He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Associate Program Director General Surgery Program at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Dr. Bhora was previously an attending surgeon in the Division of Thoracic Surgery and Chief of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to that, he was Visiting Assistant Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Bhora trained in general surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center and thoracic surgery at both UCLA Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bhora's area of interest and specialty is Thoracic Oncology Surgery, involving complex lung resections and esophageal cancer. He specializes in minimally invasive approaches to thoracic surgical disease and in the use of the Da Vinci robot to perform minimally invasive lung resections, esophageal resections, thymectomy for myasthenia gravis and resection of other mediastinal masses. He is nationally known for his expertise in advanced bronchoscopic surgery involving the airway, including airway stenting for lung and thoracic cancer. He has developed the largest interventional airway program in Manhattan and frequently is able to offer treatment with excellent outcomes to even the most complex of patients.
Dr. Bhora is actively involved in basic science research and in resident and medical student education. In addition to being Associate Program Director, he serves on the faculty of a national board review course involved in thoracic surgery resident education. He is Director of the Surgery Basic Science lab and Director of the fourth year thoracic surgery clerkship for Columbia University medical students. He has authored several important publications, including the use of Nitric Oxide and Heat Shock in myocardial protection and is regularly asked to present and lecture at national and international meetings. His current research interest involves the prevention of lung injury and the prevention of lung cancer metastasis. He also has an interest in health care information technology and research databases to improve quality, cost efficiency and outcomes.
Dr. Bhora is active in several national societies including the Leadership Committee of the Association for Academic Surgery and the American College of Surgeons, where he is a founding member of the New York chapter of the Young Fellows Association.
